Two ways to see your service from the outside
A mystery shopping agency sends a person who poses as an ordinary customer. They visit, write or browse, then fill in a questionnaire about what they saw. It is a long-standing method, and for physical locations it is often the only way to see the counter, the queue and the room.
An open AI check from Straight Answer does one thing: it writes to the live chat on your website as a customer would, and it says so. The name field reads “AI check by Straight Answer”. The first message says it is an AI running an open check. Then it asks what your buyers ask, and records every reply with a timestamp.
| Question | Mystery shopping agency | Open AI chat check |
|---|
| What is tested | A store visit or an online journey, defined by the agency's questionnaire. | One full conversation in the live chat on your own verified website. |
|---|
| Hidden or disclosed | Hidden: the shopper poses as a regular customer. | Disclosed: the AI names itself in the first message and never claims to be human. |
|---|
| Who evaluates | The shopper fills in a form after the visit, from memory and notes. | Our judge, Inspector Square, scores the verbatim transcript against one published checklist. |
|---|
| Evidence | The shopper's answers and comments. | Every point tied to a quote and a timestamp from the chat. |
|---|
| Time to report | Set by the agency: scheduling, the visit, then the write-up. | Ready once the conversation ends and the judge has scored it. |
|---|
| Repeating it | A new shop each time; another person may judge it differently. | On demand, same rules every time, so reports compare fairly. |
|---|
| Cost per test | Quoted per shop by the agency. | $1 for the trial, then a monthly plan with a set number of checks. |
|---|
Agency methods and prices vary. Ask an agency for its per-shop price, its questionnaire and its turnaround before you compare.
When an agency is the better fit
If what you need to test happens in a room, such as a store, a showroom or a front desk, a person has to be there. Agencies also cover several channels in one program and can benchmark many locations at once. An AI check does not replace that.
When an open AI check is the better fit
If your leads start in the chat on your website, the questions that matter are concrete: how long until a real answer, whether the answer has a price or a time, whether anyone offers a next step. Those are easy to measure from a transcript and hard to remember after a visit. An AI check measures them the same way every time, and you can run it again the week after you change something.
It is also honest with your team. Nobody is tricked. The report is about the answers, not about catching someone out.
